Ward 8 City Councillor Candidate
I was born on a farm in Ontario and the youngest of five children. I was taught to work hard and to be frugal with my money. My work ethic was born on the farm and hasn't wavered to date.
I have been a self employed business man for 17 years. Currently, my wife and I have 3 businesses in 3 very different sectors.
In 2005, we stared an import /export business together while at the same time investing heavily in Calgary real estate. Our business grew quickly and within five years was nearing a million dollars in sales. We were known for high quality products, exceptional customer service and intricate inventory control systems that spanned four Continents. This business required travel to many countries where tough negotiations while respecting foreign cultures were essential to success.
We sold this business in 2012.
In 2007, we opened Billie Tuesday, a fashion focused enterprise. This business has morphed along the way but is currently dealing in custom designer clothing made in London, England and is still designed by my wife.
In 2010, I started a home renovation company specializing in single family bungalow restoration. This business would transform a 1950's bungalow into an executive style home with everything two people could want. Our target market was couples without children and empty nesters. While builders and developers continued to make homes larger and larger, we carved out a nice little niche market for ourselves. Drafting blueprints, managing all manners of tradesmen, and dealing with multiple City of Calgary departments, were just some of my roles. These all certainly resulted in a clear understanding of the need to reduce outdated, redundant policies at City Hall.
Currently I am the Director of a Liquor Importing Agency that has a strong presence in the Alberta market. The companies recent launch into British Columbia during the Covid 19 Pandemic is a testament to the operational systems I implement, and also to the exceptional team of people who surround me.
This has been my main focus and now the renovation business is limited to select clients whom we enjoy working with.
I have learned everything I know through first-hand experience and have never had a safety net. This is important to note because failure is not an option. I am the person who will get the job done.
Starting a business is completely different from running a business and it is this creation mentality, one of my core assets, that I will bring to the Council Chambers. Our city has been in a perpetual state of electing people who are either unable, or unwilling to adapt to changing circumstances. This is where my skills will come into play. Even when it looks like there are no solutions at hand, (which is how many Ward 8 residents have told me they currently feel) I know if we maintain focus on our future, without abandoning our present, we will overcome every obstacle.
